DUMFRIES, Va. (November 7, 2024)—Northern Virginia’s premier gaming destination—The Rose Gaming Resort in Dumfries, Virginia—officially opened its doors today with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony featuring state and local leaders, senior leadership from Churchill Downs Incorporated, and excited guests and players from across the region.
“Churchill Downs Incorporated is thrilled to deliver a destination resort that will be a major economic contributor to the Town of Dumfries and Northern Virginia,” said Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI. “Along with our local hiring commitments and strong family-supporting wages, we are committed to continued investment in Prince William County as we are proud to do for all of the communities in which we operate in Virginia.”
Churchill Downs Incorporated invested $460 million in the destination gaming resort which is expected to create 500 jobs and generate $35.5 million in annual tax revenue.
“From a landfill to a landmark, The Rose marks a new era in Dumfries’ 275-year story,” said Mayor Derrick R. Wood, Mayor of the Town of Dumfries. “This project is transforming our town with 500 new jobs, millions in tax revenue to strengthen public services, and critical investments in our infrastructure. But perhaps most exciting is the vision of The Rose as a vibrant destination resort complete with a sprawling park and lush greenspace on land that was once a landfill. This is just the beginning. We look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to experience The Rose Gaming Resort, giving people not just a reason to pass through Dumfries, but a reason to make us their drive-to destination.”
Located just off I-95 in the Town of Dumfries, The Rose Gaming Resort will feature:

“The opening of The Rose is the culmination of many years of hard work at the local and state levels, with the public and private sectors working together to create the beautiful, world-class facility here in the Town of Dumfries and Prince William County,” said Del. Luke Torian, 24th District Delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates. “
The Rose will bring hundreds of new jobs and millions in new tax revenue that will be invested back into our schools, parks, and programs, which make this community such a special place to live.” The Rose will also contribute to the revival of Virginia’s thoroughbred horse racing and equine industry. The opening of The Rose will add sixteen days of live racing to Colonial Downs’ 2025 live racing season, fund purses to attract worldclass racing talent, and support jobs around the Commonwealth.
“The opening of The Rose marks an exciting step forward for Virginia’s long, proud tradition of live thoroughbred racing,” said Secretary Matthew J. Lohr, Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry. “In addition to significant job creation and tax revenue generated on-site, The Rose will lead directly to 16 additional days of live racing at Colonial Downs, fund purses to solidify Virginia as a premier destination for thoroughbred racing, and create economic opportunities around the state in Virginia’s $2 billion equine industry. I join Churchill Downs Incorporated, the Town of Dumfries, and race fans around Virginia in celebrating this exciting day.” The Rose is committed to being a good neighbor and supporting its home community.
The Rose has made considerable investments to support the Dumfries and Prince William County communities including more than $2.4 million in monetary, in-kind, and pledged contributions to the town and local nonprofits, as well as adopted strong wage and local hiring commitments.
“When guests come to The Rose they will find great food and entertainment, exciting games, and smiling faces ready to welcome them to Northern Virginia’s premier gaming destination,” said Bobbi Sample, General Manager of The Rose. “With strong wage and local hiring commitments, a new public park, and millions in local investment and charitable giving, we are committed to being good neighbors and partners. We are proud to call Dumfries our home and to give back to this community that has so warmly embraced us.”
